Monk’s Groovy Beans is all about treading lightly on our Mother Earth. That’s why we only sell Certified Organic Beans.

Organic Farmers “Dig” Their Soil

To tread lightly and still produce a stellar organic product, quality soil must exist. In order for our farmers to prolong the superior quality and equilibrium of the soil, they must replenish the soil’s fertility through natural means, as opposed to using synthetic fertilizers. They do this by either composting, planting a nitrogen-fixing tree, or by applying animal “green” manures for added nutrients.

Organic farmers also don’t “overwork” their soil. They rotate fields and let some go fallow for periods of time, which in turn helps to replenish the soil’s natural strength. Fallowing also helps to fight soil erosion. If a plantation is located near a forest, some organic farmers also “reforest” areas that need to grow their coffee in the middle of the forest to maintain the natural environment.

Organic Farmers “Dig” Natural Methods of Pest Control

Instead of using pesticides chock full of chemicals, organic farmers use natural methods to control destructive insects, fungi, and plant disease. For example, the coffee berry borer is the most common pest that devastates coffee farms. Instead of using a costly and harmful pesticide, Organic Coffee farmers use a variety of “natural” methods to eliminate it. Some have used a naturally occurring fungus called beauvaria bassiana to combat the insect. Some might simply use what is known as “cultural” control, where the infested berries are picked immediately and disposed of, as are the berries on the ground. A third method is the usage of wasps who feast on the pests.

Organic Farmers “Dig” and Abide by the Rules

In order for a farmer’s product to be certified organic, a third party certification organization must verify the agricultural methods utilized do in fact heed the requirements. Any product produced outside of the U.S. must also be generated in compliance with stringent U.S. standards for organic products. Some of the standards are:

  • Before they can be accredited, farmers must produce their coffee without synthetic pesticides or other prohibited substances for a minimum of three years.
  • Farmers must have crop rotation plans to help reduce soil erosion, to combat the depletion of soil nutrients, and to also control harmful pests.
  • Farmers are not allowed to use any chemical additives, fertilizers, or pesticides.
  • Agricultural methods are utilized to reduce pollution from air, water, and soil.

Monk’s Groovy Beans is committed to keeping Mother Earth happy and our coffee drinkers healthy. With every purchase of our Certified Organic Beans, our customers can have peace of mind that not only are they doing good for Mother Earth; they are doing good for themselves as they enjoy our Certified Organic Coffee blends.
