Monk's Vision

Monk, the uncommonly, intelligent Boxer, knew he had to take to the open road. He couldn’t put his paw on it, but something inside spoke to him and sent him on a quest for the truth. Perhaps for his calling… perhaps for his soulmate… perhaps for a bone. With the open road in front of him, he decided to chill and let whatever it was he was searching for find him.

He wandered down Main Street in Sans Soul, USA and peered into the throng at the local Corporate Coffee Giant and thought to himself: bad scene.

“The coffee they pour is good, but it’s just so common. It doesn’t have the good soul power.”

He ambled on, conscientiously objecting to the corporate money mongers and how they exploit the small coffee farmers.

He came upon a long line of men, women, and children and he checked them out. It was another bad scene. These folks were in line at the Sans Soul, USA community shelter, in search of a hot meal and a warm bed. Yet, what really bummed him out was some that many were being turned away. He just couldn’t smile at this bad vibe.

“This is far too common in our world today, and not good. But how can an uncommonly intelligent Boxer make things better?” Monk cruised along; vexed about what he had seen. John Wesley suddenly buzzed into his thoughts and he felt the good vibe:

“Do all the good you can,
By all the means you can,
In all the ways you can…
To all the people you can,
For as long as you can.”

This revelation made his paws lighter and he began to glide across the ground.

“If I am to create some good, I have to take uncommon action.”

A glint of chrome caught the corner of his eye. With the high pitched engine revving, Monk prepared to shift from first to second gear, perking his ears. His instincts to chase the bumper of the VW bus were too strong. His eyes fixed on the glistening metal, and what he saw stopped him in his tracks.

The bumper was uncommonly illuminating. The first sticker simply said “Coexist.” The next sticker read “Buy Fair Trade Coffee”. The other read, “Support World Vision.”

“Groovy,” he thought. By grinding three common ideas together, I can step on uncommon ground. It must be possible to desire the good things in life, while at the same time being good to others and creating an experience with substance, thus achieving higher ground.
